Fields is an internationally renowned artist whose work in ceramics, textiles, and installation stem from her relationship and identity based in Osage philosophy and aesthetics. The use of color, balance, and cultural motifs are adapted to the platform surfaces retaining a relationship to their use in beadwork, textiles, and other customary cultural materials. WAYBACK was originally commissioned by Counterpublic for the 2023 St. Louis Triennial. The site-specific installation and soundscape by Osage artists Anita Fields and Nokosee Fields was positioned next to Sugarloaf Mound, a property purchased by the Osage Nation, in an action that reclaimed and marked Missouri as part of their original homelands. The platforms created in St. Louis journeyed to Oklahoma, echoing the movement of the Osage people from their ancestral homelands to their present-day reservation.Following the installation at FAM, they will be distributed among the Osage community creating a link reflecting the past, present, and future.
