FAM Docent Program

Apply for the FAM Docent Program

Applications for the 2025 docent class are open Oct. 1–31, 2024 on the FAM website. Docents (pronounced DOH-cents) receive four months of onboarding training and continuous professional development. These volunteers provide tours for school field trips, adult group visits and daily walk-in tours. The 2025 class of docents will begin Jan. 7, 2024 and continue through the end of April. FAM only runs one class of docents per year.

The ideal volunteer candidate is…

  • Available during weekday mornings for trainings and school tours
  • Can walk and stand for 60 minutes while providing tours of the museum galleries
  • Comfortable using a computer or mobile device for email correspondence and accessing the docent website to sign up for shifts
  • Enjoys public speaking, including groups up to 20 people
  • Knowledgeable or willing to learn about First American arts, history and culture
  • Punctual and has reliable transportation to the museum
  • Respectful of First American cultures and the diverse communities across the region

Docent program requirements:

  • A $50 onboarding fee will apply toward a background check (can be discounted for those unable to pay this amount)
  • Participate in 80% of initial trainings on Tuesdays from 1–4 p.m. between Jan. 7–March 25, 2025
  • Complete assigned shadowing hours in April 2025
  • Once graduated into the docent program in May 2025, must provide at least 12 tour service hours per quarter to remain active in the program
